In numbers

  • 17,640 references in OpenAI’s papers (median 21 per paper)
  • 10,986 distinct cited works, 3,079 of them cited by two or more papers
  • 9,106 distinct cited authors
  • 335 OpenAI papers cite another paper in the release (509 links)

How this was made: references are read from each paper’s own TeX source (its .bib file or inline bibliography) in OpenAI’s repository, as of October 19, 2026. Works and authors are matched with OpenAlex by DOI or arXiv ID where it knows them (about four in five works), which merges a work cited in different ways and a person listed under different spellings; the rest are matched by title, and by surname and first initial. Treat the counts as close, not exact. The data is free to reuse under CC BY 4.0.
